vietnam

Temples, street food and the remarkable Ha Long Bay area. Vietnam is full of unique experiences -the ultimate backpacker destination and so much more.

Vietnam has a fascinating history and a wonderful culture. It also has some of the freshest and most delicious food I’ve eaten. I’ve been back three times now and each time I fall in love with this South East Asian country a little more. On work trips, the kindness and generosity of my hosts was always without fault. On leisure trips I made friends that I am still in contact with today.

I first visited Vietnam in 2011, kicking off a Cambodian tour with a three day stop over in Ho Chi Minh City. A few years later in 2014 I was back in Ho Chi Minh for work and tacked on some time in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay at the end. A third time, in 2015, I split my time between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi again.

I’ve eaten all sorts of street food fresh off the cart. I’ve sailed amongst the limestone crags of one of the most picturesque bays on earth. I even attempted to drive a moped through the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City!

One of my most memorable days in Vietnam started with a three hour drive to Ha Long Bay. I was on a day trip with two Australian Vietnam Veterans and my Vietnamese tour guide, Ky. The day ended with Ky and I grabbing a traditional meal in Hanoi and ending up in the middle of a police raid whilst drinking outside a shop on the street. You can read more about that here. I’ve certainly never had a boring day in this country!
