How to get to the Lindt Home of Chocolate

The Lindt Home of Chocolate is worth visiting despite being located a little out of the way from central Zurich in the town of Kilchberg. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Zurich, this little neighbourhood is a lovely little day trip from the hustle of the CBD. It’s also very possible to access the Lindt Home of Chocolate from other cities such as the lovely Basel or Lucerne, so don’t cross it off your list if you’re not staying in Zurich.

Train

Switzerland has an excellent rail network and there is a direct train between Zurich and Kilchberg station. You’ll need the S8 or S24 train at Zurich station and you’ll ride for 4 stops before arriving at Kilchberg. From Kilchberg station, the Lindt Home of Chocolate is an easy ten minute walk.

Bus

There is a bus stop right out the front of the museum for those who are not keen on the walk from the railway station. Firstly, you’ll need to catch the tram to Rentenanstalt and then take the 165 bus bound for Rüschlikon, Park im Grüene. Ride 10 stops (around 10 minutes) and you’ll arrive directly in front of the Lindt Home of Chocolate. In my experience, the buses were totally overcrowded and getting onboard with a pram and a baby proved very challenging.

Boat

Undoubtedly the most scenic way to get to the Lindt Home of Chocolate is by boat. Board the boat in Zurich at Bürkliplatz and take the short lake cruise 3731, disembarking at Kilchberg. From exiting the boat there is an easy 10 minute walk to the Lindt Home of Chocolate. Being able to commute to the museum on a picturesque boat ride is just another reason that the Lindt Home of Chocolate is worth visiting.

Tips for travelling on Swiss public transport

  • To save time and avoid missing out, buy tickets in advance for all forms of transport.
  • Some buses may allow you to purchase a ticket onboard, but most stops now have a vending machine for you to buy a ticket before the bus arrives. This helps the bus driver continue on their route without losing time, so please take up this option if you can.
  • If you’re planning to explore more of Switzerland, whether you’re taking day trips from Zurich or staying in multiple Swiss towns, then you may also want to consider the Swiss Travel Pass. This handy and flexible pass will give you unlimited travel on trains, buses and boats around the country.

Getting tickets to the Lindt Home of Chocolate

Like many European attractions that are overwhelmed from hoardes of visitors, it is always best to book a ticket in advance for the Lindt Home of Chocolate to avoid missing out. Imagine the disappointment of making the trip out to Kilchberg with the whole family and finding out that the museum is at capacity for the day! Not fun at all.

Tickets usually have a timed entry slot with a 30 minute window to enter, so make sure that you are not late or entry can’t be guaranteed. If you do get there a little early, you can always enjoy the enormous chocolate fountain in the foyer while you wait for your entrance time. Audio guides are included in the ticket price and are available in many languages including English.

Things that make the Lindt Home of Chocolate worth visiting

The enormous chocolate fountain

The moment you step into the Lindt Home of Chocolate, your eyes are immediately drawn to the towering 9-meter chocolate fountain. It is a mesmerizing centerpiece that feels straight out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Cascading with silky smooth Lindt chocolate, it’s a visual treat. Kids will be captivated by its sheer size and the hypnotic flow of chocolate, though you might have to hold them back from trying to lap up the liquid chocolate!

It’s the perfect spot for a family photo and a great place to keep the kids amused until your timed entry ticket to the museum is ready.

The Museum

After the chocolate fountain sets the stage, the museum experience at the Lindt Home of Chocolate takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the world of cocoa.

The self-guided tour is interactive and engaging, with multimedia displays that explain the history of chocolate, the origins of the cocoa bean, and the evolution of chocolate-making over time. Your audio guide will walk you through the origins of chocolate making, so you can visit at your own pace.

Kids will love the touchscreens, animated visuals, and life-sized models that make learning fun and accessible. One of the highlights is the panoramic viewing gallery overlooking the actual Lindt production line, where children can watch real chocolatiers at work.

The tasting experience

Of course one of the biggest things that makse the Lindt Home of Chocolate worth visiting is the famous chocolate tasting experience. Believe me, it doesn’t disappoint!

Throughout the museum, there are tasting stations offering a variety of Lindt creations. Try silky milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate and flavour infused chocolates of all variety.

For kids, it’s a dream come true: they can sample their favourites, discover new flavours, and even watch how chocolate is poured and shaped. The tasting is unlimited, so little ones (and grown-ups!) can indulge freely while learning about the ingredients and craftsmanship behind each bite. Our daughter had her first taste of chocolate here at 11 months old. We couldn’t let her miss out!

Tips for visiting the Lindt Home of Chocolate with kids

  • Prams are allowed in the foyer space, but not in the museum itself. It is best to baby wear or carry your little one if they’re not yet able to walk. You can check your stroller in the cloakroom and pick it up at the end of your visit.
  • Large bags, coats, jackets and umbrellas all need to be cloaked. This meant we had to cloak our nappy bag, so we did a quick nappy change prior to entering the museum and hoped for the best.
  • Go early! Avoid the crowds by trying to arrive at museum opening. By the afternoon, it gets very busy. It also means that the kids have the whole day to run out all the sugar they’ve consumed, rather than being hyped up right before bedtime.
  • Book in advance. Don’t disappoint the kiddos by arriving to find there’s an hour long wait for entry OR WORSE, that there’s no availability for the day.
  • No food or drink are allowed in the museum, so finish that bottle of water before you enter or store it in a locker.
