Planning a trip to Sydney and wondering if the famous SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium deserves a spot on your itinerary? How to get to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium
SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium is conveniently located on the city-side of Darling Harbour. The closest railway station is either Town Hall (about a 15 minute walk), but the Sydney Metro will get you even closer by travelling to Barangaroo Station.
My favourite way to get to Sydney Aquarium, though, is by ferry. It just feels quintessentially Sydney to be catching the ferry from Circular Quay around to Darling Harbour and the kids will love the experience of being on a boat. You can simply tap on using a card or the digital wallet on your phone for Sydney’s ferries – nice and easy!
If you drive, then park in the Harbourside car park and make sure you prebook parking using the code MERLIN to get a parking discount. You can then have a nice leisurely walk around Darling Harbour to get to the aquarium.
The best area to stay in Sydney if you’re keen on visiting the aquarium is in Darling Harbour or the Sydney CBD.
Best time to visit Sydney Aquarium
Because Sydney Aquarium is indoors, it can feel claustrophobic if you visit on a busy day. Try to avoid crowds where possible by visiting in off peak times, such as weekdays and avoid school holidays if you can. The aquarium will get very busy on a rainy day in Sydney as desperate parents look to give their kids something to do indoors.
The aquarium is stroller friendly, with ramps throughout however on a busy day bulky prams can be difficult to manoeuvre through the crowds. If you’re visiting at a peak time, I’d recommend baby wearing or using a small travel pram.

Because it is one of the best things to do in Sydney, it is always a good idea to book in advance before visiting the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. A single entry will cost between $39 and $50 and it is always cheapest to book online
Annual Passes
When booking, consider how many times you will visit in a year, because if you’re a Sydney local and planning on visiting more than three times in 12 months, it may be worth buying a Merlin Pass which gives you access year round as well as access to the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Madame Tussauds and the Sydney Tower Eye. A Platinum Merlin Pass is $125 for a new pass and around $100 to renew.
Combination Tickets
You can also combine single entry to the aquarium with the neighbouring WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo or Madame Tussauds for just $10 extra, so if you’re planning on seeing both attractions in the same day then this is a great money win! The zoo is small, but has a great Tasmanian Devil enclosure and my kiddos also love the freshwater crocodiles.
Why Sydney Aquarium is worth visiting
Sydney Aquarium is one of Sydney’s best things to do with kids. But it is also a great experience for adults. The aquarium is one of the only places in the world you can see the elusive Dugong. There’s only 6 of them in captivity in the world and two are at Sydney Aquarium.
One of my favourite things to do when I visit is to take my time walking through the huge tunnels at shark valley, where Grey Nurse Sharks and huge rays glide overhead. I also love both penguin exhibits – the little penguins are incredibly cute and the Gentoo and King Penguins are amazing to see sliding around on the ice in their snowy habitat.
Sydney Aquarium is a great way to acquaint yourself with the unique marine life that resides in Australian waters, making it well worth visiting on your trip to the harbour city.
What makes it special for families
SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium is totally family friendly and has some really great exhibits that kids will adore. The Discovery Rockpool are is a fabulous way for kids to get up close and personal with animals like starfish, sea snails and sea urchins.
The tunnels under the Dugong and Shark exhibits reign supreme with my kids. Even my four month old will happily sit in the pram or carrier for ages and just watch the marine life swim over them. These tunnels are awesome for babies still in lie-flat bassinets too as they can lie down and just look up to see the fish swim overhead.
My little ones also love the jellyfish section, where tanks are lit up in different colours to illuminate the jellyfish. It feels magical and they just adore watching these strange creatures blob around.
My toddler also cannot get enough of the Penguin Expedition which has a short boat ride through the snowy exhibit so you can see the King Penguins up close.

How long to spend at Sydney Aquarium
The average visit to Sydney Aquarium is around 1.5 to 2 hours. On busier days, there is often a line for the Penguin Expedition ride which may mean you need to allow a little longer.
What to pack to visit Sydney Aquarium
Sydney Aquarium has a kiosk at the exit, however it is average food and expensive, so I definitely recommend packing some snacks for your little ones. Usually I take a little lunchbox full of a sandwich, some crackers, fruit and maybe a yoghurt pouch. We like to sit at the deck overlooking the Dugong enclosure and enjoy a quick bite to eat while watching them swim around.
Take a water bottle as there are stations to refill throughout the aquarium.
Other than food, wear sturdy shoes as there’s lots of walking up and down ramps.
Nearby Attractions
As mentioned before, the WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo is right next door and whilst it is nowhere near as awe inspiring as Taronga Zoo, it does offer a glimpse into the unique wildlife of Australia including crocodiles, kangaroos and Tasmanian Devils.
Also in Darling Harbour is the expansive Australian National Maritime Museum which boasts a collection of vessels that can be boarded and explored.
The Chinese Garden of Friendship is also located nearby which is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets. It’s a truly beautiful Chinese garden that transports you to tranquility and peace upon entering.
For a great free activity, the awesome Tumbalong Park has a huge playground and water play area. In my opinion it’s the perfect way to run off some steam before heading home.

The unique Australian sealife is best seen up close and where better to do it than by wandering through immersive tunnels where you can see it from every angle?
